Web hosting: cPanel Sections

Web Host cPanel

Basic Cpanel usage.

Cpanel controls access to the various functions of the website’s hosting account.

You can change the website’s files, database, subdomain, email addresses, web host settings are located in Cpanel. With Cpanel, you control how your website functions, you can get into your email account, create subdomains, and other important website functions. The actual number of options in a cPanel account will vary depending on the web host and the services they choose to give to you. The web host will turn off certain functions when they set up Cpanel, not all of the sections below will show up on all hosting accounts..

Cpanel Dashboard

Cpanel has many different sections on the page, some are for your email services, control access to the website, the tools you have installed, and who can use your account. These sections arrange the different tools that are created for you to manage your email address, domain, database, files, metrics, security, and other services for your website.

Email

Not every Cpanel will have email services, this panel is only present if you have email accounts provided as a part of your hosting package. In this area we can setup email addresses, email forwarders, manage contacts, spam, email filters and other settings.

Files

All file management tools used to add, moving or deleting files, and images in the web host account are located in this area. A user can backup the website using backup wizard, create and manage FTP accounts. If you need to access the website files in the web host, the file manager is located in this part of Cpanel.

Databases

This part of Cpanel has all of the database tools for your website, you will be able to modify a database, edit the databases, and create new databases. Other tools include controlling who can view and change the databases, and setup different other types of databases.

Domains

The domain section contains all web hosting domain tools to edit the domain settings. The functions to create subdomains, redirects, aliases and change the DNS are located here.

Metrics

All of the different tools to monitor the traffic in and out the web hosting account are located here. This includes Error Logging, visitors, bandwidth, and other tools.

Security

Security contains some tools to help secure the web hosting account. SSH Access, SSL Certificate management, hot link protection, leech protection and IP Address blocking are located in this part cPanel.

Software

The Software section contains tools to install server related software packages like Perl script and many different types of server software onto the web hosting account. This area contains web host optimization and PHP tools. You can make any updates to the settings for the website, or web host in this part of Cpanel.

Preferences, Web Apps and Softaculous

The remaining areas of Cpanel are the preferences, web applications and softaculous installer tools. The web host may choose not to include the last two items in a Cpanel account.

To change the settings in Cpanel use preferences. Any changes that you make to preferences don’t affect the web host dashboard the user first sees when they log in. Cpanel preference changes will not affect the tools that are installed by the user.

The two remaining sections involve software installers, any web applications that are available are in the web applications section, and Softaculous has installers for applications like WordPress, Joomla, and certain e-commerce tools. The installer will do the work to install the software. After that, the user needs to set up the software once the install process is done.
